Our changing planet: Responding with action for green tomorrow
Since the emergence of humanity on this beautiful planet, humans have been searching for the hidden treasures of the earth for their comfort. In this quest, they have uncovered many secrets. These treasures include underground mineral resources. However, the unbridled use of these resources is not only depleting them but also destroying the natural beauty of the Earth. One of the burning issues arising due to excessive use of these resources is climate change.
Climate change, or global warming, is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. Understanding its causes is essential to mitigating its effects. While many factors contribute to climate change, key ones will be briefly discussed.
Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane, and chlorofluorocarbons, play a significant role in global warming. A considerable part of the greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and chlorofluorocarbons, emitted by the industrial infrastructure and vehicles. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to a rise in global temperatures. Greenhouse gases are also involved in the indirect depletion of the ozone layer by cooling the stratosphere. The ozone layer is a natural layer of ozone gas around the planet and a boundary between space and the atmosphere of the Earth. It plays the role of a natural filter for the harmful radiation emitted from the sun, consequently, depletion of the ozone layer plays a role in global warming and climate change. Natural factors like oceans, lakes, and wetlands also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but their impact is minimal.
The consequences of climate change are far-reaching. Global temperatures are melting glaciers, leading to rising sea levels and threatening coastal cities. Disruptions to natural rainfall patterns are affecting agriculture, and floods are becoming more frequent.
To combat climate change, it's crucial to address its root causes. The use of fossil fuels as energy by the industries must be replaced with green and renewable energy. Similarly, hybrid and electric vehicles should be introduced. A plantation drive is essential to grow more trees. Forestation and the development of green buildings can reduce carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which is a major element of greenhouse gases, and produce oxygen, which is consumed by living things. The United Nations' SDG 13, Climate Action, emphasises the need for urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change. Individual and collective efforts are necessary to promote renewable energy sources, reduce fossil fuel consumption, and increase awareness among the masses about climate change.
Governments must also take action to implement SDG 13 and promote sustainable development. By working together, we can reduce the devastating impacts of climate change and achieve a more sustainable future.
Note: SDG 13 refers to the 13th Sustainable Development Goal out of 17 SDGs of the United Nations, which focuses on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
